How Versiii Ranks Local Service Providers

Last updated: November 1, 2025  | Author: Versiii Editorial Team  | Review cycle: Every 6 months per market

Versiii rankings are produced through independent editorial research. No contractor pays for a ranking position. Sponsored or featured listings are clearly labeled and do not influence editorial rankings. This page describes exactly how we evaluate and rank local service providers.

Our Six-Factor Ranking Model

Every contractor is scored across six dimensions, each weighted by its importance to consumers in local home service markets. The weights below reflect our research into which factors most strongly predict a positive homeowner experience.

1. Licensing Verification — 25% of total score

We verify active contractor license status through official state licensing board records, checking that: the license is current and in good standing, it covers the specific trade type, and no disciplinary actions or suspensions are on record. Contractors with expired or restricted licenses are excluded entirely.

Example sources: Alabama State Licensing Board for General Contractors (ASLBGC) for Alabama markets; NC Licensing Board for General Contractors for North Carolina; California Contractors State License Board for California markets. We document the specific source used for each market.

2. Review Quality and Volume — 20% of total score

We aggregate and analyze reviews from Google, the Better Business Bureau, and Yelp. Google reviews are weighted most heavily due to identity verification requirements.

  • Minimum threshold: 15+ Google reviews required for inclusion
  • Recency weighting: Reviews from the past 18 months count 3× more than older reviews
  • Response accountability: Contractors who respond to negative reviews score higher
  • Pattern analysis: Repeated complaints about specific issues are flagged and documented

3. Response Time Assessment — 20% of total score

We research advertised response time commitments and verify emergency availability claims against review-reported experiences. For emergency categories (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, water damage), this factor is weighted at 30%.

4. Pricing Transparency — 15% of total score

Contractors providing written, upfront pricing receive higher scores. We evaluate: whether online pricing estimates are available, whether reviews report consistent pricing vs. surprise charges, whether service call fees are disclosed upfront, and whether financing is available for large projects.

5. Service Breadth — 10% of total score

We evaluate the range of services within the primary trade category. Specialists with deep capability in their niche may outscore generalists on this dimension even with fewer listed services.

6. Insurance Verification — 10% of total score

We verify liability insurance and where required, workers compensation coverage. Uninsured or underinsured contractors are excluded from all rankings.

How We Research Local Pricing

All pricing ranges on Versiii are research estimates, not contractor quotes. We develop ranges through review-stated price reports, publicly available contractor pricing data, trade association publications, and regional adjustment based on Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data.

Pricing is adjusted per market using a cost-of-living multiplier from BLS regional data. A market with a 1.38× multiplier means labor costs run approximately 38% above the national baseline. Estimates are reviewed and updated every 6 months per market.

Important: All pricing on Versiii is labeled as estimated. Always get written quotes from at least three contractors before committing to any project.

Data Sources

  • State contractor licensing databases (all 50 states)
  • Better Business Bureau public records
  • Google Maps / Google Business profiles
  • OSHA public records for safety violations
  • State attorney general consumer complaint records (where public)
  • Manufacturer certification databases (GAF, Owens Corning, James Hardie, Carrier, Trane, etc.)
  • Direct contractor outreach for service area and insurance confirmation
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) for pricing benchmarks

Update and Verification Schedule

  • License status: Verified every 6 months per market
  • Review data: Refreshed quarterly
  • Pricing estimates: Updated semi-annually
  • Business status: Verified annually, with rapid updates after major events
  • Post-disaster priority: After tornados, hurricanes, or major storms, we prioritize rapid updates to affected market rankings within 2 weeks of the event

Each ranking page displays its most recent verification date.

Exclusion Criteria

Contractors are excluded from Versiii rankings if they:

  • Lack a valid current state contractor license in the required trade
  • Have active disciplinary actions or license suspensions
  • Have unresolved BBB complaints alleging fraud, deceptive pricing, or job abandonment
  • Cannot be verified as carrying liability insurance
  • Have fewer than 15 Google reviews (insufficient data for reliable assessment)
  • Are identifiable as out-of-state storm chasers without a permanent local office

Editorial Independence

Versiii accepts no payment for ranking positions. Any sponsored or featured placements are clearly labeled and handled by a separate commercial track that has no influence over editorial rankings. Our editorial team does not communicate with our advertising team during the ranking process.

Contractors may submit correction requests if they believe our data is inaccurate. We review all correction requests and publish corrections when warranted. Submitting a correction request does not influence ranking position.
